St. Anthony
Saint Anthony of Lisbon, also known as Saint Anthony of Padua, was born in Lisbon between 1191 and 1195 and died in Padua on June 13, 1231. Baptized as Fernando (of Bulhões), he began his studies in Coimbra, where he deepened his religious scholarship. He became a Franciscan in 1220 and traveled widely. In Padua, Italy, he showed his gift in the practice of sermons that became much admired, being considered eloquent, persuasive, full of zeal. His reputation for holiness led him to be canonized by the Catholic Church shortly after his death. His great knowledge made him one of the most respected figures in the Catholic Church of his time. Santo António is the patron saint of the city of Lisbon and also patron of the Italian city of Padua. He is considered the patron saint of amputees, animals, barren, boatmen, the elderly, pregnant women, fishermen, farmers, travelers and sailors; of horses and donkeys; of the poor and the oppressed; it is invoked to find lost things, to conceive children, to avoid shipwrecks and to secure marriage. It is celebrated with large parties in various places around the world, on the 13th of June.
