The functionality of religious bas-reliefs in religious buildings
Religious bas-reliefs are works of sacred art used as architectural decorations in religious buildings. Their main function is to symbolically represent religious stories and characters, with the aim of transmitting a spiritual message to the faithful. These works of art have been used since ancient times to enrich the architecture of churches and places of worship. Each bas-relief has its own symbolism that is interpreted differently depending on the culture and religion to which they belong.
The types of materials used in sacred bas-reliefs
The materials used for the realization of these religious architectural elements can be different: ceramics, clay, terracotta, metal, bronze, resin are just a few examples. Each of these has specific characteristics:
- Ceramics and clay are mainly used for bas-reliefs of small dimensions and simpler shapes
- Bronze and metal are suitable for more complex and larger works.
They can also present some peculiarities, such as the choice of colors or the addition of decorative details that enrich the work of art.
Bas-relief in classic or modern style?
A modern bas-relief has more essential and minimalist shapes while the classic style has more elaborate details and more references to tradition. Both these styles, however, must be made by expert artists or by specialized religious objects brands to obtain the desired effect with each piece, that is, to inspire the faithful a moment of communion and prayer.
