In Christian religion, light not only is used to brighten the darkness, but it is also a synonym of the Lord's presence. Liturgical candles have always appeared during celebrations and not only.

BAPTISMAL CANDLE OR PASCHAL CANDLE

There are several liturgical candles which are used in churches. These may differ according to the season and celebration. The baptismal candle is used in occasion of the first Sacrament, the Baptism. On the other hand, in honor of the celebration of Christ's resurrection, here the Easter candle. This is kept alive till the Pentecost, which is the moment of Christ's ascension to the glory of heaven.

AMONG VOTIVE CANDLES AND TABERNACLE CANDLES

There are also many votive candles that are daily lit by the faithful in front of statues of saints or even just inside churches. These are usually lit by the faithful in prayer, but especially when asking for grace. The votive candles are contrasted with the tabernacle candles, which are meant to remind the faithful who enter the church of Christ's presence. There are many examples of other types of candles used in churches. These include Advent and Candlemas candles.
