On
May 8, 2025, the Church marked a new chapter in the history of the Catholic religion. The Conclave elected Cardinal
Robert Francis Prevost as the
new Pope—the
first American ever to assume such a significant and authoritative role.
ORIGINS AND RELIGIOUS VOCATION
He was born in Chicago on September 14, 1955, Pope Leo XIV showed a deep religious calling from a young age. He entered the
Order of Saint Augustine in 1977 and went on to dedicate his life to missionary work, theological formation, and service to the Church.
His journey eventually led him to Peru, where he served for years as both a parish priest and later a bishop, earning recognition for his closeness to the people and commitment to the poor.
A PATH OF TRUST AND LEADERSHIP
In January 2023, Pope Francis appointed Prevost as
Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops—one of the most strategic roles in the Vatican, responsible for the selection of bishops around the world. This prestigious appointment solidified confidence in his spiritual discernment and his capacity for leadership.
LEO: A NAME FULL OF MEANING
By choosing the name
Leo XIV, the new Pope intentionally references Pope Leo XIII (1878–1903), renowned author of the 1891 encyclical
Rerum Novarum, considered the founding document of Catholic Social Teaching. This symbolic choice reflects a particular focus on social justice, labor rights, and human dignity—issues that remain at the heart of the Church’s mission in a world marked by inequality, conflict, and environmental crises.
CONTINUITY AND RENEWAL IN THE CHURCH
While Pope Leo XIV embodies
continuity with the path set by his predecessors, his election also signals a
renewed commitment to the social and spiritual challenges of our time. In a rapidly changing world, fraught with tensions and uncertainties, all eyes are now on how the new Pope will interpret and embody his role as a global spiritual leader. (
