Curiosity
Wine and religion: here an interesting curiosity
The importance of the Holy Mass wine and curiosity about the Last Supper. The term has never been explicitly mentioned. Why?
Did you know that in the Bible the word “wine” appeared at least 278 times in 285 verses, while the word “vine” appears 141 times in 135 verses? There are so many references to its symbolic meaning.
The word wine first appears in the Bible with the story of Noah (Genesis 9:20-24). The episode describes him as the first man in the Bible who produces and consumes wine.
In the Christianity, wine has always had a strong symbolic and ritual value. This is even more evident in The Last Supper. In that specific context there's a mention to the chalice, the vessel of wine, but also the fruit of the vine. Not the word “wine.” This is probably a choice due to the strong connection with its symbolic value, which well transcends the mere description of a physical object that recalls Jesus' blood.
Coming back to the present days, during the celebration of the Holy Mass there is no distinction between red and white wine. However, between the two the latter is generally preferred since, when spilled, it leaves less visible stains. If you would like to find out what features the Holy Mass Wine should have, we invite you to read the article “Holy Mass wine and its particular features”. (Il vino – simboli biblici)
